Record Store Day 2013

Its record store day tomorrow. The fact that you are reading a music blog would suggest that you know what it is about, but if you just happen to be passing by, let me explain. Actually let Jack White explain:

If that didn't make sense, Record Store Day is an effort initiated by independent record stores in the U.S. to encourage people to come out and shop there for the day. First started in 2008, the day has become a day of limited releases aimed squarely at the completist rather than the average punter. The event has become more relevant here since the close-down of HMV. People have to think about where to go to find physical music. Because of the nature of the music on offer though, I don't think it will be attracting too many new customers to record stores which for a fella who spent all of his Confirmation money on cd's is a sad thing. Unless labels consider publishing special once off's like a One Direction 7", it looks like music shops as we used to know them are in a permanent state of decline. So for you completists out there, what does tomorrow hold? Well if you're in America, specifically in Nashville, you can record a 7" in Jack White's music store. Sadly that sort of stuff isn’t available over this side of the pond.

The entire list of special releases can be found here, those for the UK/Ireland market are here and there is a handy printable .pdf here. Baron over at TwangNation has compiled a nice list of americana and alt-country releases available on the day. From the list, I've spotted some interesting stuff from Josh Rouse, Justin Townes Earle and Phosphorescent. In Ireland, there are 18 record stores participating with a good geographical spread. For once, it's not all Dublin based. Just when I say that though, the main events seem to be happening in the capital.

Wingnut Records are having events in Galway including some cake sale. Sounds lovely. Any americana/alt-country stuff seems to be in the capital. Tower Records are hosting a major event throughout the day including live music in Madison nightclub from 1pm-9pm which is free to attend. Included in that line-up is some familiar faces to Eirecana including The Eskies and The Hot Sprockets. Check the times here.

The Hot Sprockets are also performing at Freebird Records. As well as releasing a special 7" of their new single "Soul Brother" on Saturday, they are also having the single launch later Saturday night in Whelan's.

Record Store Gay is a sister event with the aim to raise money for Outhouse a LGBT community centre with an all-day session being held at Outhouse (Line-up times are here). Previous Eirecana featured artist Lights Camera Sundown are playing. They did this lovely, moody, dark ABBA cover especially for the day.
